Google Page Experience Algorithm Update

Updated: Aug 16, 2021

Google Page Experience Algorithm Update

Google recently announced in 2021 their new Google Experience page rank update. Google has been steadily working to make its search results pages more user-friendly, and this latest change is no different. Google's goal with this update was to reward sites that provide a great experience for users, while penalizing those who do not.

If you want your site to maintain its rankings in Google's search engine, then it is essential that you are aware of these changes and the impact they may have on your content strategy going forward.

In Google's new update, they are now looking at how fast your website loads and whether or not it provides a good user experience. Google has come out with some suggestions for what to do if you want to maintain your page rank in Google's search engine. If the majority of people who visit your site find that their pages load too slowly and are not able to access the content they want or need, Google will likely rank your pages lower.

Google suggests the following methods of improving your websites page experience:

  • Its recommended that websites have a page loading time of less than two seconds in order to provide the best user experience. Google also suggests using website caching or CDNs and keep track on how much data your site is consuming and how often it needs to be updated.

  • Google encourages you to ensure website content loads as quickly as possible so Google will rank your pages higher. Google also suggests compressing images so they don't take up too much space and to switch out heavy plugins for lighter ones.

  • Google recommends that you use Google's PageSpeed Insight tool, which can analyse a website in seconds and provide real-time feedback on how it could be improved from both the user perspective and Google's perspective.

  • Google encourages you to make your website as fast and responsive for all types of mobile devices (mobile friendliness) by using Google's Mobile First Indexing Tool. Google also recommends that websites use speed testing tools, such as Google PageSpeed Insight or GTmetrix, which can show page loading times with different browsers and connection speeds so you can see how Google sees your website and what you need to improve.

  • It is recommended that a visitor does not spend more than eight seconds waiting for content, they will most likely leave the site without clicking any other links on your page. Google also suggests using Google's Lighthouse tool, which is an open-source web auditing framework created by Google to help analyze your website and provides Google's PageSpeed Insight scores as well. (This can be accessed from Google Page Speed Insights

Google has come up with a list of things you can do to make sure Google ranks your page higher on its search engine results pages (SERPs).

Some Google suggestions for optimizing the user experience include:

  • Making some content 'clickable' by keeping links short and to the point, so Google users can quickly access what they are looking for within pages.

  • Providing a clear call to action on your page by using buttons or headings that make Google's user experience better.

  • Offering an interactive design that Google recommends because it will help Google determine how often people stay on your site.

It is recommended that Google users use Google's PageSpeed Insight tool to see how fast their website loads on different speeds and browsers. Google also recommends using the WebPagetest or Lighthouse tools to get more accurate results for your site.

PageSpeed Insight provides Google's score for your website and WebPagetest can show page loading times with different browsers. Google Lighthouse also offers Google's PageSpeed Insights scores, as well as the ability to see what is slowing down a site.

Google encourages all businesses to use Google Analytics so they are aware of how people are using Google's search engine and can monitor Google Trends to see what people are searching for.

Where can I monitor my website's page experience?

Google Search Console dashboard

Users can log onto their Google search console platform to view and assess the progress of their website's page experience . Google also has a dashboard with suggestions on how to fix any website problems. From the dashboard, users can view which pages are not performing well and need to be adjusted .

Google’s latest update to its search engine is set to have a significant impact on the ranking of websites. The page-experience algorithm will consider factors such as “did they scroll past your story? Did they click out after 10 seconds or less?” and penalize those sites that don't meet these standards with lower rankings in organic searches.
